TASK:
Design a medium sized flat pack accumulation furniture product suitable for CNC manufacturing.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Design and manufacture a series of two furniture items suitable for CNC production, taking into consideration design limitations and requirements of CNC milling.
Target Audience:

• Sustainable Material • Customisable colour scheme • Affordable • Aesthetically pleasing
• User assembly • Minimalistic • Flat pack furniture • Small families, singles, or couples.
Manufacturing:

CNC Machining: CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. Using CNC machining, CAD data (computer-aided design) can be transferred directly onto the work area. The CNC process is carried out on a milling machine or router, resulting in a rapid, precise and high quality product (Thompson 2007).

Suitable manufacturing process for one off or mass production, limited materials, thicknesses and sizes.

Timber: Hoop Pine Plywood

Hoop Pine is a furniture grade plywood. Hoop Pine (Araucaria Cunninghamii) is a native Australian specie found in Queensland and New South Wales and is a sustainably grown in Queensland, Australia. The Austral Plywoods resource is 100% plantation grown and managed by HQPlantations, part of the Hancock Group. The planting to harvesting cycle of Hoop Pine is presently about 50 years.
Life Cycle Asessment
•Uses widely available and sustainable timber, ECOply, FSC certified.
•Uses wax finish, target market are able to continue to coat to increase life time of product.
•Uses timber dowels to dry fir the parts together, if the user decided to discard the product, the wood can be easily recycled or naturally rot.

Dowels:
I have chosen to make this product a snug dry fit furniture item. No glue is required, and the tightness of the fittings between the dowels and timber faces will have enough strength to remain stable without any glue required.

Current production life cycle assessment: ‘at its most simple level, this strategy accepts the need for temporary products’. This strategy embraces the human desire for change and focuses on creating objects that have limited life span but are designed to take this into account.
This chair features a minimalistic but detailed design, suitable for residential, office, hospitality and retail use. Clear construction with equal attention to the top and the bottom. In addition, the chair suitable is for casual relaxation. Made from sustainable materials, such as Hoop Pine, which is a furniture grade wood, grown in sustainable Australian tree plantations in Queensland.
